How It Works & Methodology

The Hours & Timecard Calculator computes total billable hours and gross earnings for shifts across a workweek. It calculates exact elapsed time between start and end timestamps, automatically subtracts unpaid lunch/meal break durations, and handles overnight graveyard shifts that roll past midnight.

Gross Pay Formula: Gross Pay = (Regular Hours × Base Rate) + (Overtime Hours × Base Rate × 1.5).

FLSA Standard & Overtime Pay Rules

Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), covered non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half (1.5×) their regular rate of pay.

Certain jurisdictions (such as California) also enforce daily overtime rules (e.g., 1.5× pay after 8 hours worked in a single day and 2.0× double pay after 12 hours).

12-Hour (AM/PM) vs 24-Hour (Military) Time

The 12-hour clock divides the 24 hours of a day into two periods: a.m. (ante meridiem, midnight to noon) and p.m. (post meridiem, noon to midnight). In contrast, the 24-hour clock (commonly called military time in North America) runs continuously from 00:00 to 23:59, eliminating any ambiguity between day and night.
