Calculate sales tax, VAT, or GST from a rate you enter, find the final total, or extract the pre-tax price from a tax-inclusive amount.
This calculator computes mathematical tax amounts based on your entered rate. Always verify applicable legal rates with local tax authorities.
Calculation Formula
A consumer in California buys equipment quoted at $250.00 net, while a contractor in the UK receives a tax-inclusive business invoice for £600.00 that includes 20% standard VAT:
| Scenario 1 (US Net → Gross) | $250.00 Net × 8.25% Tax Rate = $20.63 Tax | Final Checkout Total = $270.63 |
| Scenario 2 (UK Gross → Net) | £600.00 Gross ÷ (1 + 0.20) = £500.00 Pre-Tax Net | Extracted VAT = £100.00 |
💡 Notice that simply subtracting 20% from £600 would yield £480 (a £20 calculation error). Dividing by 1.20 correctly identifies that £100 represents exactly 20% of the £500 baseline net price.
Select your calculation direction: "Add tax (Net → Gross)" to calculate sales tax and total checkout price, or "Extract tax (Gross → Net)" to separate the base cost from a tax-inclusive receipt.
Choose your transaction currency and enter the price (pre-tax or tax-inclusive).

Sales Tax (used primarily in the United States) is a single-stage tax assessed only at the final point of retail purchase. Value Added Tax (VAT, used in the EU, UK, and 160+ countries) is an incremental multi-stage consumption tax collected at each production stage based on the value added. Goods and Services Tax (GST, used in Canada, Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand) operates similarly to a comprehensive single-rate VAT.
Because the original 20% tax was calculated on top of a smaller base amount. Subtracting 20% directly from the larger gross total removes too much money. To properly extract a 20% tax, divide the gross total by 1.20 (or 1 + Tax Rate / 100). For example, £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, with £20 tax.
To calculate sales tax manually: Tax Amount = Net Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100), and Total Checkout Cost = Net Price + Tax Amount. For example, on a $50 purchase at an 8% sales tax rate: $50 × 0.08 = $4.00 sales tax, giving a total of $54.00.
Enter $200 as the price and 8.875 as the tax rate in "Add Tax" mode. The calculator computes $17.75 in sales tax, resulting in a final checkout total of $217.75.
In most US states and international tax jurisdictions, essential necessities like unprepared grocery food items, prescription medications, and certain medical devices are either fully exempt (0% tax) or taxed at a special reduced rate.
