📖 About & Rules: Othello

Othello (also known as Reversi) is an abstract strategy board game involving play on an 8x8 uncheckered board with discs that are black on one side and white on the other.

Game Rules

Each move must result in at least one opponent disc being trapped between the newly placed disc and another disc of the current player along a straight line (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally). All trapped opponent discs are flipped to the current player color. If a player has no valid flanking moves, their turn is skipped. The game concludes when neither player can move, and the player with the most discs wins.

Tips & Strategies

  • Secure the corners: Corner discs can never be outflanked or flipped for the rest of the match, providing permanent stability.
  • Avoid placing discs adjacent to empty corners (C-squares and X-squares) early in the game.
  • Focus on mobility: Having many available move options while restricting your opponent moves is more critical than having high disc count in early game.
