What is the recommended source image for creating a favicon?

A square 512×512 or 1024×1024 PNG file with a transparent background works best. High-contrast shapes and bold iconography scale down much better to 16×16 pixels than complex photos or fine text.

Do I still need a .ico file in 2026?

Yes! While modern browsers support PNG and SVG favicons, legacy browsers, Windows taskbars, RSS readers, and internal IT tools still specifically request /favicon.ico at the domain root.
